Symposium : New territories of Art

Published: Jan 21, 2009 - 11:44 AM

“From the Industrial Heritage to Art Factories in Europe” on Thursday, February 5, 2009, from 8:45 am. From the beginning of 1970’s, artistic groups have investigated deserted industrial production sites and have transformed them into new places providing shelter for artistic activities. Now known as “New territories of Art”, these places are often well-known for lodging artistic groups specifically concerned with making art more accessible, especially for people who would generally not be impacted by institutional art.

This symposium is aimed at getting the European industrial heritage reconversion process into artistic venues, interrogating the increasing number of art factories in Europe and the notions of material/immaterial heritage.

It also attempts to call into question the weight of those initiatives in European cultural policies and the involvement with artistic democratization, the issues of aesthetic research and sustainable development espoused by the groups housed in these places.

GENERAL PROGRAM OF THE DAY :

The morning will be dedicated to the artists, architects, political and cultural players as well as research workers who will present past or current experiences and avenues of reflection for the development of new territories in art, in an attempt to take stock of the situation in Europe.

After lunch, the participants will be invited to join one of 3 workshops on the following subjects:

·          Workshop 1 : Is the aesthetic produced in art factories different in regard to art produced in a more classical context?

·        Workshop 2 : Should we look at these initiatives as a new political and social model?

·        Workshop 3 : An Art Factory, a shelter or a monument?

We’ll close the day by a full synthesis and an aperitif, enjoying Yves Marchand and Romain Meffres'exhibition <http://reliques.online.fr/> .
