Proposal for amendments to report on cultural industries
Published: Jan 07, 2008 - 06:54 PM
Pearle* supports the proposals made in the report, against the background of the Communication on a European agenda for culture in a globalising world, whereby special attention is paid to one of the objectives in the Communication. Representing those responsible for the ‘creation’ of art and culture, Pearle* believes that it is necessary to take account of cultural industries in all their aspects and diversity, thereby avoiding focusing too much on one particular sector within the cultural industries. Therefore Pearle suggests a number of amendments to the draft report. The amendments proposed aim to: - favour a broad definition of cultural industries, which should be as wide as possible in the European context since the definition in individual Member States may differ - underline the necessicity of balancing the economic and non-economic outputs of culture, hence indicating the particularity of the cultural sector - favour in a structured way the application of article 151 in all relevant policy fields (non-exhaustive list: regional policy, employment and social affairs, consumer affairs, intellectual property, justice-home affairs-security, external relations, taxation, internal market, competition, ...)
