Overview of the contemporary art sector in the French Community
Published: Jan 16, 2009 - 09:33 PM
The 50-or so operators in contemporary art who benefit from the agreements or recurrent grant programs of the French Community participated in this study, which aims to provide a picture of their activities, their collections, their audiences, their environment, their staff and their financial resources.
From the information provided in this report, some points are particularly notable:
• Contemporary art is mostly an urban phenomenon: 27 of the 51 institutions are situated in large towns, and, there are none in rural areas
• Amongst their main activities, as expected, you will find the organisation of temporary or permanent exhibitions; while only 45% of institutions own works of art.
• Other activities are widely spread: for 80% of institutions the publication and release of works; and for 50% of institutions the organisation of training for professionals.
• The number of works of art listed is fairly impressive: 2,135,000 pieces. But the Museum of Photography owns over 2 million. The other 52,500 pieces are shared amongst 22 other associations.
• A fairly unique characteristic of the sector: ¾ of people working in the sector have a higher education diploma, and 2/3 have a diploma in the area of fine arts.
