l’Institut International de la Marionnette
Published: Oct 29, 2007 - 05:50 PM
Dedicated to training and research, the Institut International de la Marionnette has played an important role in obtaining this recognition. Many young performers – puppeteers from France and beyond – who trained at the Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Arts de la Marionnette (ESNAM) are changing the face of modern puppetry. The developing links between puppetry and the other arts are stimulating the work of researchers and experiments by artists from all kinds of horizons. This artistic profusion will be a source of more and more developments and interactions in the years to come.
THE PROGRAMME OF THE PUPPETRY DIPLOMA DIPLÔME DES MÉTIERS DES ARTS (DMA) DE LA MARIONNETTE
The dynamics of this training is structured by the foundational work of the Teaching Committee, comprising regular contributors and guest artists. A constant movement back and forth between theory and practice, between conception and implementation ensures that teaching and course units are tested on stage.
Basic theatrical skills taught throughout the duration of the three-year course include acting and dramatic effects, the body and gesture, visual artists, playing musical instruments, singing, the history of theatre and representation and living languages. Growing out of this ongoing instruction, workshops run by puppet masters, directors and artists introduce students to specific and singular artistic worlds.
Starting in the first year, these workshops give rise to individual and group projects. Performance for the public is an integral part of the teaching concept throughout the three years. Stage technologies (light, sound, electronic, mechanical images, etc.), administration and management are also covered by the three-year course.
The results of workshop projects and diploma productions are performed for the public but also for theatre programmers and professionals in order to bring students to professional attention and to promote their professional development. CONDITIONS OF ADMISSION Candidates must be aged 18 or over. The maximum age is 26. There is no obligatory school or university qualification for admission, but the school will look favourably on a good level of general education (BAC with theatre option, drama classes, art school, etc.) and evidence of an active engagement with the theatre.
Foreign candidates must be able to express themselves at an acceptable level in French. Further information and application form on www.marionnette.com CONTACTS ESNAM Jean-Louis Heckel, head of teaching Brigitte Behr, training department secretary for.institut@marionnette.com
CIEM / ESNAM ESNAM has an active relationship with sister organisations for the training of professional puppeteers around the world. It initiated the Convention Internationale des Ecoles de Marionnettes (the international agreement of puppet schools), which was signed in Charleville-Mézières in 1990.
