The Zagreb Dance Centre ceremonially opened on Monday evening on Ilica Street. The project owner is the city of Zagreb, which has invested 36 million kunas or five million Euros in its renovation and equipment.
Renovation of the building, which has an area of 1,500 square metres, started in 2005 and ended in September 2009. The centre was designed by Croatian 3LHD studio.
At the opening ceremony, Centre Art Director Mirna Zagar said the centre as a new choreography base would open new possibilities for dance by providing a new locale for education and practice.
Zagar added that the Zagreb dance centre was the first building for dancing in Croatia since its independence in 1991.
She added: "We have been waiting for this centre for more than 50 years. During that period, 40 dance groups have been founded and numerous dance projects undertaken. They finally have a place in the city centre."
Zagreb is proud of its long dance tradition and is known as a cradle of contemporary dance in Central Europe. The city has ethnic dances, ballets, contemporary dances and dance shows on offer," she added.
